Under the San Clemente Pier

1 05 2010

This is one of the shot that I show people when they ask me why  I go through all the trouble to shoot the mulitiple exposures and process them in the HDR software to fine tune the results. As you can clearly see in this photo – there is a ton of detail under the pier that would just go to black as the camera is trying to expose for the sunny areas. At the same time, the exposures that show the detail under the pier “blow-out” the sunny areas. Only  by exposing for both areas in separate exposure can you get the complete dynamic range that you see in the resulting image. The human eye and brain can accomplish this task easily – cameras have a very limiting dynamic range. Lucky for us we have the software and knowledge to get “around” this limitation.
